Sources for the War of Spanish Succession in the Peninsular

Annotated bibliography for the War of Spanish Succession.

Bickley, D. (1992). Charles, Third Earl of Peterborough’s Campaigns in Spain 1705-1706. Wargames Illustrated, 59, 22-23.

Quite good, although as a two page article it obviously can’t have much depth.

Condray, P. (1992). The Portuguese Army During the War of Spanish Succession (1704-1715). Editions Brokaw.

A slim (25 pages) but fairly comprehensive booklet covering the history, composition, uniforms, and flags of the Portuguese Army.

Desperta Ferro!

This is LluĂs Vilalta’s blog on the War of Spanish Succession. You have to check out his booklet no. 1: Catalonia Stands Alone / 1713-1714: the Catalans’ War (2nd English Edition, January 2010).

Grant, C. S. (1986). From Pike to Shot: Armies and Battles of Western Europe 1685 to 1720. Wargames Research Group.

Good for uniforms of the main contenders (Britain, Netherlands, France, Austria), but weak for Spain and has nothing on Portugal.

Green, D. (1974). Blenheim. London: Collins.

A good detailed account of the battle and associated campaign.

Sapherson, C. A. (1994). Armies of Spain 1701 – 1715. Leeds, UK: Raider Books.

Another slim (36 pages) but fairly comprehensive booklet – this time on the composition, uniforms, and flags of the Spanish Army. It covers the two Spanish armies: the Castilian Army of Philip and the Catalan based army of Charles. Contains no Timeline.

Spanish Succession

Comprehensive Website coming out of the Netherlands.

Stanford, I. (2001) Marlborough Goes to War: The Campaign and Battle of Blenheim, 1704. The Pike and Shot Society.

A nice little booklet.

Books I know about but haven’t seen

Francis, David. (1975). First Peninsular War, 1702-1713. St. Martin’s.
