The Spanish Civil had a lot in common with WWII, but there were some key differences. I’ve got a separate page on the historical Spanish Civil War Order of Battle. Here I have attempted to explain the organisation of the dominant formations as they would appear in Fuego Cruzado – my variant of Crossfire for Spain’s wars.
Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War (La Guerra Civil Española) of 1936-39 pitted the Republican government backed by the Soviet Union against the Nationalist rebels backed by German and Italy. So far I’ve restricted my efforts to the Nationalist March on Madrid in late 1936.
La Marcha – The Beginning of the Spanish Civil War – A Timeline
This is my timeline for the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. “La Marcha” (the march) is the term used for the Army of Africa’s march on Madrid (1 Aug – 23 Nov 1936). Although called a march initially the reality was convoys of trucks travelling at high speed down the nations highways, hence my preference for the term “Drive on Madrid”.

Wargames Rules for the Spanish Civil War
Here are my thoughts on wargaming rules for the Spanish Civil War.
Which Peter Pig Spanish Civil War figures to use for what
I made up this table to help me decide what figures to buy for my Spanish Civil War project. A Yes indicates that at least some figures can be used for that troop type.
Spanish Civil War Painting Guide: Republican
This is my painting guide for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. See the overall Painting Guide for general colour suggestions.
Spanish Civil War Painting Guide: Paramilitary
This painting guide covers the three major paramilitary units – Civil Guard, Carabineers, Assault Guards – of the Spanish Civil War. They fought for both sides.
Spanish Civil War Painting Guide: Nationalist and Pre-War
In general the Nationalists of the Spanish Civil War continued wearing the Pre-War Peninsular Army uniform. This section covers Nationalist Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, Mountain Artillery, Tank Crews, Medical and other support services, Foreign Legion, Falangist, and Carlist Requetés. Most of these wore greenish-tinged khaki, but the Legion wore a distinctive grey-green.
Spanish Civil War Painting Guide: Moroccans (Nationalist)
There appear to have been three types of Moroccan units during the Spanish Civil War:
Spanish Civil War Painting Guide
All I’m really interested in is a set of instructions so somebody can paint some wargaming figures for the Spanish Civil War. That means I don’t have to describe the cloths, just the colours. I have included descriptions of unusual articles of clothing – like the Moroccan chilaba just so you can recognise them, hence paint them the correct colour.
Orders of Battle for the Spanish Civil War
I’ve outlined orders of battle from the Spanish Civil War for the following formations:
15mm Wargaming Figures for the Spanish Civil War
As I got into the Spanish Civil War I thought I’d write up my notes about the various ranges, mainly so I could remember what to buy if I ever reordered.
University City – A Crossfire Scenario in the Spanish Civil War
A scenario for Fuego Cruzado – my variant of Crossfire for the Spanish Civil War – as the Nationalists try to drive the International Brigades out of the University City. The fighting revolves around the Hall of Philosophy and Letters.
Tank attack at Sesena – A Crossfire Scenario in the Spanish Civil War
A scenario for Fuego Cruzado – my variant of Crossfire for the Spanish Civil War – featuring the brand new Republican T-26 tanks fresh off the boats from the USSR. Historically the Republican armour mauled Nationalist Cavalry in the streets of Seseña then destroyed an Italian tankette squadron. They were only driven off by Legionnaires getting personal with petrol bombs.
