Grass Tufts or Wargaming with Fairy Door Grass Mats

Brett Simpson kindly sent me some “Fairy Door Grass Mats”. I’d asked about the grass tufts in his jungle photos and wanted to know the source. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, Fairy Door Grass Mats are only available in Australia. So Brett sent me some. Despite the mushrooms and bugs, these mats are a useful source of jungle foliage. Perfect for the Portuguese Colonial War.

Brett sent a couple of packets of Fairy Door Grass Mats.

I don’t need a mat. I just need the grass tufts. So I pulled off all the pieces and separated the grass tufts from the sundry mushrooms and bugs.

The only other processing was to trim the tufts down. Brett uses his with 20mm figures but the grass looked too long for my 15mm figures. So I went through and used scissors to hack off 5mm from most of the tufts.

Grass Tufts on table

As I said, I was looking for something for the Portuguese Colonial War. I can use the grass tufts on their own for grass land (although I have something else for this)

But I’m more likely to use the grass tufts as undergrowth in jungle features. Basically it gives a more green look to the table and jungle features in particular.

What happened to the mushrooms and bugs?

Some of you might be wondering what happened to the mushrooms and bugs. I had a collection of them as a by product of the sorting process.

The short answer is … my daughters. It appears mushrooms and bugs play nicely with princesses and unicorns.

Thanks Brett

A big thank you to Brett for contributing to the look of my tables. It was very kind of him to send these to me.

  1. You are most welcome, Steven. They look great on your jungle templates. Good to see your daughters got some use from them too for their princesses and unicorns!

  2. HI Thomas,

It happens we use that sort of grass for our WWII far east fights but I have no daughters for the mushrooms and bugs remnants. (I have two little boys 12 and 9 year olds. At the moment they play the Punic wars with Playmobil miniatures…

I think I forgot to tell you that i’m a suporter of Louis XX of France.

I manage a unit of that political organisation here in Paris. (I tell you that because of your interest in the spanish story not to engage in political discussion here wich must remain only wargaming and histoty focused).

    Kind regards

    Jean-Michel
