Back in 2001 I wrote up some notes about Ilipa (206 BC) based on articles in Slingshot by John Gerson (Gerson, 1983). The notes aren’t specific to any rules but I was thinking of using them for Field of Glory.
Rise of Rome
I divide the Rise of Rome into three sections: the Punic Wars, Macedonian Wars and Iberian Wars. There is quite a lot of overlap between these. From 264 Roman fought three bitter wars with Carthage over the western Mediterranean – the Punic Wars. Roman triumphed and as a side effect began its conquest of Iberia – modern Spain and Portugal. But Iberia was a tough nut to crack. It took 200 years for the Romans to conquer the peninsular. Meanwhile the Romans conquered the Mediterranean. In the east Roman defeated the Macedonians and the Successors during the Macedonian Wars.
Steven’s Seleucid Army for Field of Glory
I’m interested in the Rise of Rome and was very happy to pick up Ian Galley’s beautiful Selucid army when he wanted to move to other projects. This army has done service under WRG 6, WRG 7, DBM but more recently using Field of Glory.

Republican Roman Light Foot in Field of Glory
Under DBM and earlier WRG games the Republican Roman light foot started as spear and Javelin guys then got upgraded to Javeliin and Shield guys in the Second Punic War. But Field of Glory does it differently. This has implications for the Mid Republican Starter Army.
What Wargaming Rules to use for the Macedonian and Punic Wars?
The Carthaginians were my first wargames army as an adult – I inherited and expanded my father’s 1/72 scale converted Airfix army. They are long gone but now I have a beautiful set of Carthaginian, Roman and Spanish armies in 15 mm for the Punic Wars. As it happens, I also have some their Macedonian contemporaries … Seleucid.

Before I moved to 15mm metal figures I had a Later Macedonian in 1/76th scale plastic figures that I, mostly, inherited from my father. I’m still rather fond of of the army even if the original figures are long gone.

The Camp – A DBA or HOTT Mini-Campaign
I was browsing through some old wargaming magazines and found an article by Steve Burt called “The Siege of Antirhinum, an Ancients Mimi-Campaign”. It looked a good basis for a short campaign for two players. I’ve changed a few things from Steve’s original to fit DBA/HOTT and to give more choice to the players.
Our first go at Warmaster Historical
John Mclennan is a bit of a fan of Games Workshop and I’m looking for an alternative to DBM for large games so we gave Using DBx Armies for Warmaster Historical (in this case Warmaster Ancients) a go. We settled on Punic Wars – John taking the Romans and me the Carthaginians. Chris Harrod hosted us and provided morale support from the sofa.

No-Mans Land Mini-Campaign
This is a skirmish level mini-campaign set in no-mans land on a fairly static front. It is applicable to any period (see the possible settings). Each player is a junior commander whose job is the patrol and control the area between the opposing forces. Over three game days and nights each player must plan and execute 6 missions from a predetermined list. The interest lies in the fact that each player is picking from a different list to that of his opponent. The key problem being addressed is “How does a commander react when faced with events not covered by his orders?”
A Load of Gauls – A DBA Campaign Matrix Game
‘A Load of Gauls’ is a Engle Matrix Game campaign based on the Gallic invasion of Italy in 225-224 BC. Battles are fought using DBA. The game was devised by Colin Tothill although I’ve made minor tweaks to it.
