German Motorcycle Troops in WW2

Mentioned by John Moher on the Crossfire forum:

The majority didn’t have machineguns. Motorcycle units were basically standard Schutzen Platoons with a little less kit riding on motor bikes and with a Platoon car (Kfz 13 car but not a Kubelwagon) or light truck to carry the ATR and Light Mortar. The PC might be in a Kubelwagon but could also be in m/c sidecar I believe (at least up until 1940 anyway). There was a time when the m/c units didn’t have ATRs. The 50mm mortars probably got carried on a m/c side-car… Either way there is always one car/utility vehicle in the Platoon HQ.

The Battalion Heavy Weapons were in standard trucks also, as were the Company HQ’s (which had escorts on m/c but main equipment & officers in trucks & cars)…

A Rifle Section was 10 men with 1 LMG riding in 3 M/C & Sidecars plus 4 Singles or something like that…. The Sidecar units carried (as well as the riders) the LMG and the spare ammo belts and stuff…
