Locations within Legends of Al-Andalus

Legends of Al-Andalus is set in “the Emirate”. In fact it could be any of the Taifa kingdoms of the period. That context defines the the locations of interest and the encounters you might have.

Map of the Emirate

I’ve made a stylised map of the Emirate showing all the locations of interest. Broadly speaking the Emirate is divided into the City, the Fort, the countryside. Although not shown explicitly on the map the Emirate is also divided into the plains (Vega) and mountains (Sierra). The City, the Port and some villages are in the plains. The Fort, more villages, the Ribat, and a generic Sierra location are all in the mountains. The mountains provide a protective barrier between the Emirate and other nations including other Muslim Emirates and the Christian Kingdoms. The city and the fort both include several small locations. For simplicity other Muslim Emirates are grouped together, as are the Christian Kingdoms. The thick black lines show the routes between locations.

Green regions are “Encounter Regions” i.e. these dictate the type of encounter you might have. Orange regions are specific locations within an “Encounter Region” and are significant for specific adventures.

City

All of the Taifa Kingdoms of Al-Andalus had a capital city. This was the centre of power and splendour for the Emir.

Combines the “Government Area (p. 45) and Public Area (p. 46) of Legends of Araby.

The Public Area is where the major public buildings are including the castle (Alcazar), Mosque and Bath House.

The palace castle is called the Alcazar. “It is a large maze like building, and heavily guarded” so players are unlikely to visit.

Fort

The name “Fort” does it a disservice as it is really a small town with a castle (Alcazar). The Fort’s primary purpose is to defend the Emirate from invasion by other Emirs or by the Christian Kings. It’s secondary purpose is to control the mountains (Sierra).

Caravaniserai

Most Caravans to and from the City pass through the caravaniserai just outside the walls of the Fort.
