Mac’s Missions v2 – Revised Pick up games for Crossfire

I recently blogged about Mac’s Missions – Pick up games for Crossfire. I’ve made a few tweaks to the system and come up with a version 2. And there is a PDF to download.

Changes from version 1

Summary of changes in version 2:

  • Rearrange the A4 sheet to include Mission Cards so that players can just cut up the sheet and pay a game.
  • Make the Orders of battle for a “small” CF battle. 80 points plus national differences so 80 points for Germans and 87 for Soviets.
  • Cost a hidden stand at 50% more points. A rifle stand that starts visible is worth 3 AP to buy and worth 3 VP at the end of the game; similarly a rifle stand that starts hidden is worth 4.5 AP to buy and is worth 4.5 VP at the end of the game
  • Specify a 4’x4′ table
  • Clarify who gets first initiative: if one side is visible and the other hidden then the visible sides starts; if both are hidden or both visible then roll a die.
  • Rename “Assault” to “Breakthrough” to make the language consistent with my other scenarios.
  • Clarify the zones on the map by consistently referring to “forward area”, “rear area” and “base edge” for each player.
  • Add a “Probe” mission between “Advance” and “Hold”. This targets the enemy forward area.

Victory Conditions

With the addition of “Probe” there is now a mission for controlling the four areas on the table, plus exiting the two base edges. The further from your own base edge the that you are aiming for, the bigger the Base Mission VP associated.

In version 2 The victory conditions for each mission are:

Mission Base Mission VP VP for all friendly troops …
Breakthrough 20 who have moved off the enemy base edge
Advance 10 in the enemy rear area
Probe 7 in the enemy forward area
Hold 5 in your forward area
Dig in 2 in your rear area
Withdraw 0 who have moved off your base edge

Eastern Front Orders of Battle

For my Play test of Mac’s Missions v1 I made four Soviet orders of battle and four German so the players could quickly choose one on the day. The “Attack”, “Attack/Defence” and “Defence” orders of battle are still usable under version 2.

I have updated the two “Hidden” orders of battle to reflect the move from 15 points to +50 points for being deployed hidden.

  1. Have played this a couple of times now and gotten two cracking games with minimal forethought or set up time. It’s great to have a way to play Crossfire as a simple pick-up game; I think I’ll be getting more games in in future.

    • Andrew, that’s great. Care to share some more details … which missions you played, nationalities, whatever?

  2. Hi Steve, I was wondering if you’ve ever considered creating a ‘modular tiles’ type map for Crossfire, say maybe six 2×2 tiles that could be put together in any layout to create quick 4×4 or 6×4 tables for Crossfire. It could help remove the thought that needs to go into laying out the map for a quick pickup game – As a newbie, I find I’m always second guessing if my layout is suitable.
