13th Guards Rifle Division (Maj-Gen. Aleksandr Ilich Rodimtsev)
Origin was 5th Airborne Brigade. Survivors reformed as 87th Rifle Division. Designated 13th Guards for fighting during withdrawal of 40th Army. Spearheaded Mar 1942 attack by 38th Army that captured Staryi Saltov bridgehead. Transferred from 38th Army to join 28th Army.

Raised Jan 1942 in Kazakhstan. High proportion of Kazakhs. First combat at Kharkov.
