Rules You May Have Missed in Field of Glory

When trawling through the Field of Glory Official Forum (Slitherine Software) and the Field of Glory Forum (Yahoo) I came across some Field of Glory rules I wanted to capture some place …

Order of March, Ambush and Flank March

If you have 12 BGs you would deploy 3-3-3-3

If you have three BG in Ambush or on a Flank March you would deploy 3-3-3-0.

If you have three BG in Ambush and another three BG on a Flank March it becomes 3-3-0-0.

Quality Re-rolls

Quality rerolls apply to:

  • Complex move tests (CMT) except to prevent shock troops from charging without orders
  • Sacking a fortified camp
  • Shooting and close combat rolls to hit
  • Cohesion tests (CT)
  • To avoid stragling when arriving from an outflanking march

They do not apply to:

  • Death rolls
  • CMTs to prevent shock troops from charging without orders
  • Variable move rolls

Impassable Terrain and Visibility

“Impassable lakes or quarries are depressions that don’t block line of sight while Impassable hills or other elevations do.”

Generals with BG in Difficult Terrain

Generals with BG in Difficult Terrain:

Page 49 says

  • IF the commander is with a battlegroup then he moves with them at their speed (although it is not very explicitly stated)
  • If he moves on his own he is restricted to light horse speed.

Difficult and Complex advances

The difficult move rule could be restated as:

Advances are only complex moves if:
The troops performing the advance are “other undrilled”
AND the advance includes a wheel and/or is less than the full move distance
AND the troops performing the advance are within 6 MU of the enemy
AND there is no commander with the advancing BG or BL

CMT for Battle Line

The only occasion I can think of where a BL makes a CMT is when it includes BWg or Art.

Wheeling in a Charge to Avoid Enemy

A charging BG can wheel to avoid other enemy as long as the wheel does not result in less bases of the initial target of the charge being hit by the charging BG.

Threatened by Edge of World

Cohesion Test modifiers: -1 for “THREATENED FLANK”. page 136 – definitions of “threatened
flank” “Any part of the BG is less than six MUs away from ANY table edge. So, if you are all the
way back against your own table edge, (less than 6 MUs), you suffer this -1 on any cohesion test?
Sounds pretty severe. How about if you are winning and pinning your opponent against his own table
edge. Same result. Ouch! Is this correct? Seems like the game designers want everyone to stay away
from the edges and play in the middle of the table.
The -1 for threatened flanks is harsh but it doesn’t apply to skirmishers. It was intentionally
put in the rules to make it harder to fortress up in a corner. If you try this in FOG it makes the
troops on the ends of the formation far more vulnerable to missiles.

“At or closer than”

The glossary (p. 136) defines “within” to mean “At or closer than”. As you cannot make a second move “within 6MU” and within includes at 6MU you cannot make a second move to shooting range. That in turn means that HF that double march cannot end at exactly 6 MU of enemy and thus will take 3 turns to reach missile troops shooting at them.

Timing of Complex Move Tests

You don’t need to declare your move before rolling for a CMT – Official !! If you even think you may need a CMT take a roll – it takes seconds. You can then decide how complicated (or simple) to make you move. You do have to complete the move of that BG before moving any other though. So you can point to a battlegroup, roll to see if it’s eligible to make a complex move, and dispense with working one out if the roll fails.

Shifting when Evading

v) SHIFTING WHEN EVADING (Page 67)

Can an evading battle group both shift sideways and contract bases to pass obstructions?

Yes, provided that in total no base shifts a net distance of more than one base width sideways
from the path that it would have taken if no shift or contraction had occured.

In effect, shifting the battle group and contracting bases at the same time can only happen where
an obstructed file of bases contracts behind an adjoining file (which requires a base width shift)
and the BG as a whole also shifts a partial or whole base width back towards the side where the
contracted file was. As a result, none of the bases have at any time shifted more than a net 1
base width. This can happen when passing through a narrow gap.

4′ x 3′ Table

Not official rules but some suggestions from Darryl Hills on using a 4′ x 3′ table with 600pts.

  • better to stay with the standard deployment distances. A smaller deployment areas causes trouble deploying troops.
  • 6″ zone from the edges worked fine.
  • Attacker ambushes needed to be slightly modified. We ended up with allowing them to deploy up to the centre line as long as they were not within 6″ of a defender ambush.
  • Quick fun games.
