Holt, E. (1967). The Carlist Wars in Spain. London: Putnam.
A nice overview of the various conflicts. Not many specifics about particular battles. Unsurprisingly the focus is the First Carlist War, however later conflicts are also covered. Holt emphasises the role of British Legion in the first war – possibly a bit much. Although the sequence of events is usually clear it is vague on specific dates making it hard to build a timeline from his information.

Fab 10 volume set from Pallas Armata. Somerville was a non-com in the 8th regiment of the British Auxiliary Legion during the First Carlist War. He had a literary bent, and this account is based on the journal he kept during the war. Lots of interesting tid bits, both at a battle field level, and on a personal level.

John Milman brought this book to my attention; this is what he had to say about it … “An ancestor of mine-Captain Edward Augustus Milman of the 33rd Regiment of Foot, published a book called ‘The Wayside Cross; or The Raid of Gomez: A tale of the Carlist War’ in 1847.(John Murray, London). A second edition came out in 1861. It is a wonderful melodrama of the period and is obtainable in the British Library and one or two others. It gives quite a feel of the people and the place. I am not sure of Edward’s actual connections but he was based at Gibraltar during this period and clearly traveled in Spain.”

There are numerous newspapers of the period that reported the war, such as the Morning
Chronicle. The Morning Post and Morning Herald were by and large against Evans’ exploits; the
(London) Times, somewhat neutral; some of them are at the Colindale newspaper library in London.
