What Terrain will you need for Dick Bryant’s Six Small Crossfire Scenarios?

Last night I ran Dick Bryant’s Six Small 2’x2′ Crossfire Scenarios tonight for some guys. I thought I’d see what terrain I need to run all six of them simultaneously or, more practically, in pairs.

Here are the six maps:

Dick Bryant 2x2 Tables for Blue Division
Dick Bryant 2×2 Tables for Blue Division

Now I have to say the features on Dick’s maps don’t always correspond to my standard Crossfire terrain templates. So I’ve gone with what is closest. These are the major discrepancies:

  • Dick’s maps for the Hill and the Woods has a slightly curved woods feature made up of three 2″ sections, so it is 6″ long and 2″ but curved so takes up a bit more space than a line would. I’ve turned this into a 4″x6″ oval feature. A 6″x3″ oval would be closer but I don’t have any.
  • Dick’s map of the Hill has a feature made up of four 2″ woods sections so it is 8″ long and 2″ wide and dead straight. I don’t have any features so narrow so I’ve replaced it by a 8″x4″ oval.

All six tables at once

So, given the above, this is what I need to set up all six tables:

Terrain Feature 1 Woods 2 Hill 3 Farm 4 River 5 Crossroads 6 Town Total
Woods 6″ circle 3 1 1 5
Woods 4″ circle 6 2 5 4 4 2 23
Woods 4″x8″ 1 1
Woods 4″x6″ 1 1 1 3
Woods 4″x2″ 1 2 3
Hill 8″x6″ 1 1
Fields 6″x3″ 4 4
Wall 6″ 2 6 8
Building 3″x3″ 1 2 1 7 11
Road 6″ 4 4 8 7 23
River 6″ 4 4
Bridge 1 1
Bunker (2 SQ) 1 1 2
Crest 6″ 1 3 4
Hedge 6″ 2 2

SELWG Pairs – a pair of tables at a time

At SELWG 2013 we offered the games in pairs. The Woods and the Hill together. The Farm and the River together. We didn’t get to the Crossroads and the Town but they would have been a pair as well.

That means I didn’t need the terrain for all of the games, I just needed the terrain for each pair. Definitely more manageable.

Terrain Feature 1 Woods
2 Hill
3 Farm
4 River
5 Crossroads
6 Town
Woods 6″ circle 4 1
Woods 4″ circle 8 9 6
Woods 4″x8″ 1
Woods 4″x6″ 2 1
Woods 4″x2″ 3
Hill 8″x6″ 1
Fields 6″x3″ 4
Wall 6″ 2 6
Building 3″x3″ 3 8
Road 6″ 8 15
River 6″ 4
Bridge 1
Bunker (2 SQ) 1 1
Crest 6″ 1 3
Hedge 6″ 2

  1. When I first did these small games, the club used a tree on a 3″ Hexagon as a woods marker. They could be arranged in about any shape but for these games I tried a more “stylized” shape for the woods. We have since re-based our trees to the usual 1 1/2″ round bases. So for presenting the games at conventions, I cut out wood areas from cork board that approximated the stylized shapes and use them along with trees . See:
