‘A Load of Gauls’ is a Engle Matrix Game campaign based on the Gallic invasion of Italy in 225-224 BC. Battles are fought using DBA. The game was devised by Colin Tothill although I’ve made minor tweaks to it.

Wargaming Campaigns for DBx, DBA, HOTT, DBM and DBR
I am a fan of campaigns and I’ve tried a few things involving the DBx family of tactical rules. The campaign system included in DBA/HOTT is ideal for one day events. And the same DBA/HOTT campaign system can be tweaked to make campaigns with more detailed tactical rules; I’ve run a couple of big DBM campaigns like this. But over time I have returned to the basics and used DBA/HOTT for the tactical rules as well. My latest initiative like this was Britannia 600 AD. DBA/HOTT are also a good complement for campaigns using Engle Matrix Games.
Timeline of the War of Spanish Succession in the Peninsular
The War of Spanish Succession was mostly fought in northern Europe, but as my particular interest is Spain and Portugal, I’ve restrict my history to the campaigns in the Iberian peninsula.
15mm Wargaming Figures for the Spanish Civil War
As I got into the Spanish Civil War I thought I’d write up my notes about the various ranges, mainly so I could remember what to buy if I ever reordered.

New Zealand’s Wars: Kiwis fighting at home and abroad
I had been studying Luso-Spanish military history for many years when a friend asked me: “What do you know about your own history? New Zealand History?” Frankly, at that time I had to admit I knew virtually nothing. I have tried to overcome that ignorance, although I’ve never quite managed to write up very much.
Almanza Project for the War of Spanish Succession in the Peninsular
The idea was the refight the Battle of Almanza (25 April 1707) during the War of Spanish Succession.
Challenges of Wargaming the New Zealand Wars
The New Zealand Wars pose a severe challenge for the wargamer. The challenge derives from a combination of the following three factors:
Wargaming the Battle of Te Ahuahu
There is much in the description of the Battle of Te Ahuahu that can inform a wargaming refight.
Wargaming Boulcott’s Farm 16 May 1846
Brief thoughts on wargaming Boulcott’s Farm (16 May 1846).
Timeline of Hone Heke’s War 1845-46
The first of the New Zealnd Wars has several alternative names, including The First Maori War, The Northern War, and Hone Heke’s War. I prefer the last name as it was Hone Heke that started the war and gave it real flavour. And Hone Heke is one of my two favourite characters of the NZ wars (the other is Titokawaru – more on him later).
Crossfire House Rules (Balagan House Rules for Crossfire)
These are the Crossfire house rules I actually use. I’ve only listed those I’ve played and liked – look elsewhere for other Musings on Crossfire.
WW2 Facts, Tactics, Orders of Battle, etc
I’ve lumped all sorts of tidbits in here.
Timeline of the First Taranaki War 1860
In early June the Atiawa and Ngati Maniapoto allies began building a pa at Puketakauere, a mile from the British field base at Camp Waitara and in full sight of it. This posed certain problems for the British. It restricted their movement, and endangered their supply lines and the security of the camp.
