Most of my figures for the Thirty Years War are from Essex Miniatures. This was because they had the best at the time I started to collect. But there are some newer, and great, ranges available now in 18mm (e.g. Khurasan Miniatures, Testudo, Totentanz Miniatures, and Blue Moon Manufacturing). So I thought I’d revisit the figures available for the Thirty Years War and English Civil War.
Index of Ranges
I’ll try to cover all ranges for the Thirty Years War and English Civil War. I ignore ranges that are in the 17th Century but not for these wars. Of course I might have this wrong so get in touch if you spot a problem.
The ranges considered are:
- Essex Miniatures
- Khurasan Miniatures
- Totentanz Miniatures
- Blue Moon Manufacturing
- Museum Miniatures
- Old Glory 15s
- Donnington
- Gladiator
- Caliver Books
- Naismith
- Lancashire Games
- Irregular Miniatures
Essex Miniatures
Essex Miniatures have a combined English Civil War / 30 Years War range. The range is big, and I have relied on it a lot for my own Swedish, Imperialists, and Spanish. The figures are servicable and relatively cheap. Essex are 15mm.

Khurasan Miniatures
Khurasan have two ranges – their own and the range originally from Testudo Miniatures. Their own range includes Thirty Years War and Confederate Irish and Scots. Khurasan use different sculptors for different ranges so the sizes vary a lot. Some the Italian Wars figures I’ve got are, for example, quite small and slim. Apparently the renaissance Hungarians are also true 15mm. The two 30 Years War ranges appear to be big and compatible with each other. I understand Mike Broadbent sculpted the entire Khurasan 30 Years War range and also did the horses for Testudo, so the horses, at least are compatible.
Testudo Miniatures (via Khurasan Miniatures)
Testudo Miniatures are an Italian range, designed by Rava Giuseppe (I guess, as he owned Testudo). Giuseppe still have a site for his 30 Years War range but no longer sells them. They are now available from Testudo Khurasan Miniatures (USA).
I’ve taken a stab at giving names to the Generals (pack ecw-tyw-generals). I cross referenced the images with those of the generals given by Rava Giuseppe.

Khuran has reorganised the packs from those of the original range. The Khurasan version of the Testudo packs are:
- ecw-tyw-generals ECW-TYW Generals (x 5)
- ecw-tyw-croats ECW-TYW Croat irregular light horse (x 6)
- ecw-tyw-dragoons ECW-TYW Dragoons or Mounted Arquebusiers (x 8)
- ecw-tyw-medium-horse ECW-TYW medium Horse with pistols or swords, mostly unarmoured in buff coats (x 6)
- ecw-tyw-heavy-horse ECW-TYW heavy Horse with pistols or swords, cuirass and buff coat (x 6)
- ecw-tyw-cuirassier-pistol ECW-TYW Cuirassiers in mixed helmet and 3/4 plate, pistoliers (x 6)
- ecw-tyw-cuirassier-lance ECW-TYW Cuirassiers in armet and 3/4 plate, with lances (x 6)
- ecw-tyw-unarmour-pikes ECW-TYW Unarmoured Pikemen (x 12, buff coat only or just jacket, pikes not included)
- ecw-tyw-armour-pikes ECW-TYW armoured pikemen (x 12, cuirass but no tassets, pikes not included)
- ecw-tyw-heavy-armour-pikes ECW-TYW heavy armoured pikemen (x 12, cuirass and tassets, pikes not included)
- ecw-tyw-english-pikes ECW-TYW armoured pikemen in English morion (x 12, pikes not included)
- ecw-tyw-advancing-muskets ECW-TYW advancing musketeers (x 12, musket on shoulder)
- ecw-tyw-shooting-muskets ECW-TYW shooting-musketeers (x 16, in 13 mixed shooting poses)
- ecw-tyw-english-muskets ECW-TYW musketeers in caps (especially suitable for English) (x 12)
- ecw-tyw-infantry-command ECW-TYW infantry command (x 12)
- ecw-tyw-field-gun ECW-TYW field gun (one gun and four crew)
- ecw-tyw-light-guns ECW-TYW light/regiment guns (two guns and four crew)
Khurasan Miniatures – Thirty Years War
Khurasan have their own brand of 30 Years War figures. They are compatible with the Testudo range.
In this photo I’ve taken a stab at naming the Imperial Generals (Pack KM-2612). Well, I’m assumed, the figures appear in the order the names are given.

- KM-2600 Thirty Years War German/Swedish Kurassiere in 3/4 plate and Zischagge helmets (one complete unit, x 12 including command)
- CLOSED-HELM-CUIR Thirty Years War German/Italian/Spanish Cuirassiers in 3/4 plate and closed helmets (one complete unit, x 12 including command)
- KM-2601 Thirty Years War German/Swedish Cavalry in Buff Coats/Jackets with pistols (x 12, one commander, one standard bearer, and ten pistoliers in four unique poses)
- KM-2602 Thirty Years War German/Swedish Cavalry in Breast- and Back-plates with pistols (x 12, one commander, one standard bearer, and ten pistoliers in four unique poses)
- KM-2603 Thirty Years War German/Central European Pike Block Core (twelve figures — three command, nine pikemen with tassets, nine pikes)
- KM-2604 Thirty Years War German/Central European Rear Ranker Pikemen (twelve figures — twelve pikemen without tassets, twelve pikes)
- KM-2605 Thirty Years War German/Central European Musketeers with plain jackets or buff vests (eighteen figures — nine loading musketeers, nine shooting)
- KM-2606 Thirty Years War German/Central European Musketeers with winged shoulder jackets (eighteen figures — nine loading musketeers, nine shooting)
- KM-2607 Thirty Years War German/Central European Musketeers with schutzenrock (shooting jacket) with sleeves unbuttoned (eighteen figures — nine loading musketeers, nine shooting)
- KM-2608 Thirty Years War German/Central European Mounted Arquebusiers/Bandolier Reiter (twelve figures — commander and standard bearer, six reserve figures (three different poses), and four shooting poses (all unique))
- KM-2609 Thirty Years War Medium Field Cannon with Five Crewmen
- KM-2610 Thirty Years War German/Central European Dragoons/Light Musketeers Skirmishing (x6 in three poses)
- KM-2611 Thirty Years War German/Central European Dragoon Horseholders (two holders and four horses)
- KM-2612 Thirty Years War Imperial General Officers (Tilly, Wallenstein, Pappenheim, Other General Officer, Two Aides, and Cuirassier Kettle Drummer)
I really like the pack KM-2607, the Musketeers with shooting jacket with sleeves unbuttoned. Although marketed as German/Central European they would also do perfectly for French.
