I think I obsess about ruins. I have lots of ruins already but that didn’t stop me Planning my Cool Ruins for Crossfiregrad and Ponyri Station. So one of my projects for 2021, 2022, and 2023 has been to “Buy, build, paint more 3″ x 3” sectors so I can play both Crossfiregrad and Ponyri Station solely with Cool Ruins” (Crossfire of course). Well, I don’t know about Ponyri Station, but now that my 75mm and 150mm sections have arrived I can definitely do Crossfiregrad.
Crossfiregrad
I set up the table for Crossfiregrad – A Battle Report of the Crossfire Scenario by Doctor Phalanx using my new models. Looks alright I reckon.

Unboxing
I was so excited when they arrived from Warbases. A big box of flat packed kits.

I’ve laid out each of the kits so you have an idea what they look like when they arrive.

Assembling
Then I set to work with glue.

Two things in my design made assembly easy: interlocking corners and slots in the floor. You can see the interlocking corners on Ruin B-75-S2-L.

And underneath you can see the slots to make the floor lock in.

And then there were a lot more …

That was quite a lot of buildings.

Rubble and Painting
The next step was the grunge them up a bit. I added a fair amount of home made rubble before finally painting using my normal ruined brick look.

Where did these come from
I thought the Stalingrad Ruins from Warbases are Great Value but they are the wrong shape for Crossfire. So I Designed my own Cool Ruins, using the Warbases kits as inspiration. I sent my designs off to Warbases, who then laser cut them out for me.
Warbases keep the masters, so you can probably order some if you wish.
Next steps
I already had a lots of ruins. Now I have more. Still not content I want to expand my collection so I have cool ruins for Ponyri Station Scenario from Hit the Dirt as well. To be honest my plans for cool ruins probably extend beyond that as I originally saw 9 batches, or phases, to the project:
Batch 1 – 75mm and Mill [Done]
Batch 2 – 150mm [Done]
Batch 3 – 225mm
Batch 4 – Factory
Batch 5 – Corners
Batch 5 – Four Sided
Batch 6 – Ponyri Railway Station
Batch 9 – Optional
I’ve got Batch 1 and 2 now. But that still leaves a lot of ruins to design, buy, assemble and paint. Or, if a moment of sanity prevails, I might stop now. No chance.
Those look really great, I never even realised Warbases did ruins. Something to go on my Xmas present list!
Yes, Warbases have two ruined buildings (Stalingrad A, Stalingrad B) … which I feature in Stalingrad Ruins from Warbases are Great Value.
The ruins I feature in today’s post were a custom job. I designed them specifically for Crossfire. Warbases cut them. Warbases do have the masters for my models, so you could conceivably get some from them. That would be cool.
Breathtaking!
I wish these had been available before cutting out all those windows!
Richard
Richard, well, two things inspired me to design these kits:
1. You did a fantastic job of cutting out all those windows on your own models for Crossfiregrad
2. I knew I’d make a mess of it because I’m just not precise when it comes to modelling (I tried, I really tried, but I just can’t do straight lines or 90 degree angles)
So I used a computer for the designs and got some help on the precise cutting bit.
